ABC Wednesday - N is for Nobel Peace Center
N is for Nobel Peace Center.
The Nobel Peace Center in Oslo is in what was originally the old railway station Vestbanen. The station closed in 1989 and the Peace Center opened in 2005. As you can tell it was a rainy day when I was there.
A photograph of the museum from the other direction can be found on Oslo Daily Photo.
My second photo is a closeup of the windows underneath which are engraved the three great buzzwords:
BROADMINDEDNESS
HOPE
COMMITMENT
The Peace Prize is awarded annually and the presentation ceremony is held at the Oslo City Hall with the Norwegian king in attendance. Once again there is a better picture of this building, taken from the other side to mine, on Oslo Daily Photo.

Beautiful buildings! I like the clock and it looks like there is a little carnival going on in the last picture.
ReplyDeleteLove the arched windows, such a great composition for a shot.
ReplyDeleteI have always though of the Nobel Peace Peace Prize as an award and never given a though to the structure behind it. I have been enlightened - good pic
ReplyDeleteLovely building! Since 2005, huh, I thought it looks older than that?
ReplyDeleteGreat N subject on a topic about which I know very little. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteIt looks very noble... lovely building... I love the arches.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely building. Great buzzwords too! :o)
ReplyDeleteI had the amazing fortune to meet Desmond Tutu in 1994! What an honour. It was 1984 he was awarded this prestigious prize. 1994 was th same year Nelson Mandella was elected President, so quite a moment in time to witness.
ReplyDeleteA very nice post! Thanks for linking to my photo. :)
ReplyDeleteReply to deb: The building is much older. It used to be a railway station (it was when I was a kid). It was built in 1872, so you're quite right it's old. For years it wasn't used for anyting, until they turned it into the Nobel Peace Center.
First photo is of first class architecture, the last someones vision of what they think is a nice building ie the designer.
ReplyDeleteOslo is not one of my favourite capitals although another trip there may sway me
It's a magnificent building. Great photo.
ReplyDeleteI love the second shot with the arched doorways
ReplyDeleteI have been out visiting the UK ABC'ers before I am off to work. The photo with the three windows is my favorite.
ReplyDeletebeautifull shots
ReplyDeleteGlad I came back for a second look! 1872, thats... 135 years old whew! I'm fairly sure I can hardly find buildings that old in my country.
ReplyDeleteI cannot recall ever having seen the building where the peace prize is given out. I have seen the ceremony but that's all. Nice photos.
ReplyDeleteA great "N" post! I love what I learn from my blogger friends.
ReplyDeleteI never knew such a place existed. Thank you for enlightening me. You are right, it will take 6 months to go through the whole alphabet, but those X's and Z's will be hard.
ReplyDeleteGreat N post. Beautiful buildings and the words are great too. Thanks for visiting my blog and your comments. They are most appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThe fiirst one doesn't look very Norvégian to me. More from the south!
ReplyDeleteWhat's this alphabet thing?
I love the close-up shot of the windows. What a wonderful, informative 'N' post (I'm new to ABC Wednesday...this is only my second week).
ReplyDeleteLove the shot of the arches
