I see emergency exits on that side of the pond are quite similar to ours!

ReplyDeleteold theatres_
ReplyDeletea poem well written(may there be no need ever for the rescue plan or the doors)..
Judging from what little I can see of it from your photo, It must be a charming theater. What kind of performances are produced there? I'll bet it would be a great place for Shakespeare! I don't think I would want to exit.
ReplyDeleteThank You.
Edward and others -- if you follow the links I provided you will see that the last live show was Annie Get Your Gun in October 1974. A second cinema was built upon the stage, resulting in Royal One and Royal Two twin cinemas. In 1992 the Theatre Royal closed completely and was soon on the market for sale. Following failure to attract a buyer and the listing of the building preventing its demolition, the theatre is still vacant and in need of extensive repair and restoration to return it to its former glory and enable the doors to open again. The Onward Trust formed in 1999 has worked tirelessly since then and perhaps in about three years it is hoped to re-open part of the theatre.
ReplyDeleteI love that doorway photo-it has so much class and the words fit perfectly!
ReplyDeleteThere's something secretive and special about the doorway. An interesting time and place -
ReplyDeleteA compact but powerful message to preserve what we love. A perfect protal to preservation!

ReplyDeleteWonderful photo and poem. Looks like a glorious old theatre with a rich history... you can sort of feel it in the walls on the picture you have used here. I hope you can rescue and restore her. She looks like she deserves to live on.
