ABC Wednesday - D is for Dog

I deliberated for some time over what to do for D this week. In the end I decided to do D for dog.

The dog pictured above, almost hiding in the grass, was discovered by us recently at Stapeley Water Gardens.

The first dog I fell in love with was Mandy, a black poodle who belonged to my sister-in-law Daisy. I used to take her for long walks. At home we had a budgerigar and my mother wouldn't let us have a dog.

Eventually I met and married Christine. At the time of our engagement, her mother's dog Ellie, a Jack Russel terrier, was pregnant. She produced a litter of six but only three survived. I chose my favourite pup, a little blob of brown which tried to bury itself in my waistcoat. I christened him Digger.

The other two pups were found homes and Digger stayed with my mother-in-law until after our honeymoon. One day I may dig out and scan some photographs of Digger and do a post about him.

I wrote all about our last real dog in June on Penny (Midnight Melody).

Now the only dogs we keep are a black mastiff who looks out of the living room window at the world, and a dalmation that sits by the side of the television. Neither of these need any more looking after than the one at Stapeley Water Park.

I mustn't forget though, Tuppence, my faithful whippet who hates squirrels and occupies his virtual life on Facebook.

There are now two ABC Wednesday blogs:The first is open to all ABC bloggers, while the second requires bloggers to first contact Denise or myself for an invitation.

  1. I admit I had to look for your dog, but it was a very clever way of placing a statue. It was "as it should be" and fitted very well with the words.

PS Mine will be up in a few minutes, but a different one than I indicated...

  3. As a dog lover, I applaud your choice today. I don't have one at the moment, but I do have sweet memories of my latest, Star - a boxer. She was the gentlest and most loyal dog ever! :D

  5. I wondered where the dog was - then saw him. Looks as though he is creeping up on fish.

  22. Oh dgs... I love them but living in a tiny apartment I can't have one... yet! Loved the story of your dogs, they're such incredible company! I had one when I was a kid alled Black, a stray little thing that strong like a bull and sweet like an angel. Lucas needs to have one, all boys should!
Great post, and the photo of the all-attention-hidden dog is adorable!

    Kisses from Nydia.

  24. Will be looking forward to your post of Digger...   Obviously animals play a huge part in our lives, and personally I enjoy them more than a lot of people...

Ten or twelve years ago someone gave me a cat and she has become the love of my life and ruler of the roost...

And please accept my apologies for my confusion this morning with the dual approach to ABC Wednesday.   If that's the way you've decided to do it, then I'll fall in line and sort it out...   It's been a busy morning for me, so I've only now worked my way through the Mr. Linky page, so I'll stop over to the no-comment page and see who I've missed...

    Best regards, Don and Kitty
