Shadow Shot Sunday:
Stockport Bear Pit

A cold Monday morning in Stockport. A strong sun casts low shadows. In the background is Mersey Square, the front end of the Merseyway Shopping Centre built over the culverted infant River Mersey. In the foreground are the icy steps leading into the bear pit which overlooks the emergence of the Mersey. Bear baiting was abolished in the 1830s but prior to that bears were kept in large caves cut into the sandstone at the foot of High Bank Side.

For a more extensive and coloured view of this scene see Geograph.

  3. The sun allows for lovely shadows, the sun feeling a bit warmer as it lies to the south. Bear fighting seems a brutal 'sport', yet the pit sits in the shade with steps to nowhere particular. A B&W beauty!

  4. Lovely shot...and fascinating contrast between the peaceful scene here and its brutal history.

  5. I very much like this shot, Gerald. I love its clarity and that it's in B&W.

  6. Bear baiting, cock fighting, do fighting, all unfortunate 'sports' for man's blood lust.
Though shadows of those days still linger, your photo puts the past to much better use.

  8. Wonderful shot... so glad we've come to be a more civilized society...however, we've still got a long row to hoe!

Thanks for the look into your history!

  9. What a great photo. It sure does look cold there! I've never heard of bear pits or bear baiting before. It doesn't sound like a pleasant activity. Especially not for bears :(
