ABC Wednesday - X is for Xania

Xania aka Chania aka Hania is a city in the West of Crete. For an explanation of how it comes to bear three names see this post on the excellent blog A Lemon Tree Of Our Own.

I've already posted a series of sixty photos of Crete at Crete 2006
and a different series of thirty photographs on my photoblog Sithenah beginning with Landau in El Venizelou Square, Chania, which is the location of the first of these four charcoal renditions.

This one shows my wife, Christine and I comfortably seated behind Georgious.

A mixture of ancient and modern walls in Xania.

and finally the lighthouse at the entrance to the Venetian harbour.

  3. The charcoals were created from my original photos using PaintShop Pro.
Photos with a good bit of contrast work quite well - I first tried the technique when a magazine editor wanted some b&w illustrations.
In the end, the editor chose to use some other ones so these seemed ideal to use here, rather than more photos.

  4. Congratulation - that was my favourite. I did not dare use because of the uncertainty of the spelling. I was there the in thr first week of September, and it won't be the last. Recommended.

    Creative use of extrusion!

  6. Oh, now after reading the comments I see how you did those "charcoals". I must play at something like this myself - but sadly it won't be of scenes from Crete.
