I've only ever been to Cardiff once. That day was the 29th April, 2006.
We were up at the crack of dawn; in fact before it cracked. It was a day-trip by rail; a 500-mile round journey.
Our taxi to the station over-charged us and the train was late. So late in fact that it had a knock-on effect and by the time we got to Cardiff we were over two hours late and it was almost time to come home again.
We had a brief wander around and found a nice place for a drink. We made friends with a busker, visited the market, just before it closed, and stocked up with provisions for the homeward leg.

One day I think I'd like to go again, but for a week and at a more leisurely pace. Anyone know of a reasonably-priced wheelchair accessible hotel?
Like you. I have been once to Cardiff (in 2002). I was there in connection with a conference, but found a little time for sightseeing. The Welsh nationalist awakening (if it can be called that?) was very evident. What pleased the Norwegian participants was the prominence of the author Roald Dahl and the rebuilt, former Norwegian Seaman's mission as a cultural centre.

Interesting photos. Train and bus delays are a fact of life during our Philippines trip. We sit around a lot and stare into space a lot LOL

It must be wonderful to travel so much. I'm going to Barcelona on Friday for a week! Perhaps I'll find a lovely "obscure" town to enjoy as a break from the city.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking how nice it would be to go on a 500 mile trip by train but when I read the rest of the story it changed my mind. It's a shame you didn't have more time but then it probably made the time you did have more memorable. It sure looks like a fun and interesting place. Love the old church!

ReplyDeleteWell, I also have been to Cardiff once. It was in June of 1966. My friend and I spent a short time there on our way through to stay with relatives of a friend of my sister's in Merthyr Tydfil. (My sister, incidentally, lived in Cardiff, California.)
ReplyDeleteIt was fascinating to stay with a family in a small village for a couple of days. Later that fall a great tragedy occurred in the village when one of the coal tips slid and buried the schoolhouse. Most of the children of the village were lost in that event.
I am sure that if I remembered more about Cardiff itself, it would have changed both much and little, if you know what I mean.
