O is for Oswaldtwistle.
We went there almost a year ago and I've previously recounted part of that tale here in Four Hours in the Life of a Sausage.
In the grounds of Oswaldtwistle Mill is a pond replete with ducks and a couple of black swans.
By the side of the pond we came across some toadstools, including this fly agaric. For more information about the Amanita muscaria see this Cheshire Wildlife Trust webpage.
You can see the toadstool in the context of its surroundings in a picture on my photoblog Sithenah. One of the black swans with other fungi can be seen at http://sithenah.aminus3.com/image/2007-10-10.html.
Here's a few more fly-agaric pics I came across on blogs recently ~~ AB Photo Latvia ~~ Adelaide Daily Photo ~~ Bad Photographer ~~ Cheltenham Daily Photo ~~ Eye on Texel ~~ Sydney Daily Snap ~~ Synchronizing ~~ Vantaa Daily Photo
Ackworth born, that's very fun and cool! We looked in the same spot this year (that you've linked on my blog Synchronizing) but didn't see any.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link!
I took a photo of one of those mushrooms a couple of weeks ago. Until then I'd never heard of them. As for Oswaldtwistle, I wouldn't like to try and pronounce it after a few drinks.
ReplyDeleteI've seen these on Dick's blog. They sure are colorful and unusual looking.
ReplyDeleteI came across one of these mushrooms the last time I was in England. Of course it was much photographed. I don't think I have seen them in the US.
ReplyDeleteI visited the links, very nice and I like yours also.
ReplyDeleteI've got pics of a weird fruit in Cambodia which look quite similar to that toadstool, only it's green, but with the same kind of spots! And the fruit's edible! Waiting for the right time to post it in my blog. Oswaldtwistle what a mouthful. Named after Mr Oswald Twistle, is it?
ReplyDeleteThe name is usually pronounced "os-ell-twi-sel". The twizzle bit of the name is from the meeting of two streams. Some good background on the town can be found at http://www.answers.com/topic/oswaldtwistle
ReplyDeleteLove the mushrooms...so child storyish! LOL!
ReplyDeleteJust need a gnome to sit on it with a fishing rod!
what an odd looking mushroom/toadstool.
ReplyDeletegreen ducks and fairy tale toadstools, two of my favourite things. :))))
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place. I went mushroom hunting (photograph wise) the other day and never saw anything as colourful as yours.
ReplyDeletenice one
ReplyDeleteI too could picture a gnome sitting on the toadstool with a fishing pole. The fungus just doesn't look real. Great shots for "o".
ReplyDeleteGlad you gave the pronounciation for Oswaldtwistle. Where is it situated - never head of it before. Those toad stools look so nice, but I believe the are very poisonous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for adding my photo to a link from yours. The other photos of toadstools are cool.
ReplyDeleteThose are some awesome photos, and I love the 'O' word, Oswaldtwistle... I have never heard it before.
ReplyDeleteThe photo of the ducks is spectacular... LOL I wish I could take photos as well as you.

Gerald - I love the names you have in your part of the country - they characterise the difference in a very nice way. Thanks for all the links, I have photo's red capped fungi that I knew nothing about.
ReplyDeleteThe ducks seem to look interested
ReplyDeleteThat is one humongous toadstool. I have never seen one before in person.
ReplyDeleteThe photo with ducks is really beautiful but the one with mushroom is more interesting to me because I’ve never seen this sort in private; maybe only in some fairytale. :-) I like its red color and white spots.
ReplyDeleteGreat O post--what a great word--Oswaldtwistle! The mushroom is something else.
ReplyDeletehey! thanks for the linkage!
